Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is the easternmost region of Northern Italy. The region borders the Veneto to the west, Austria to the north, Slovenia to the east, and the Adriatic Sea to the south. The terrain is mountainous in the north, with plains and coastal lowlands in the south.

The cuisine of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is influenced by its neighbors to the north and east, including Austria Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia, and is quite different from other northern cuisines. Viennese sausage, Hungarian goulash, and Bohemian hare all appear on beer hall menus throughout the region. One dish the region does share with other northern regions is polenta; it is a staple there, as it is in Piedmont, Lombardia, and the Veneto.
